The Departed (and Miami Vice)...Rocky

Above is the link to "The Departed," Martin Scorsese's next film set to be released this Fall. On the computer screen it's not too impressive, but I saw it in front of "Miami Vice," and it looked incredible. I think it tries a little too hard to make the movie seem "tough," when really it doesn't have to try AT ALL because of what it is: A Martin Scorsese movie about street crime starring Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, and Mark Wahlberg. DiCaprio looks to be the best out of all them, his character seems to be hurting the most. Nicholson is doing his typical Nicholson charm, but there's a danger to it this time that I like. And I have a feeling Wahlberg is gonna end up being someone to hate, which I can manage. The film is a remake of a fairly good Japanese flick called "Infernal Affairs." The writers from that film are on board for this along with some guy named William Monohan who hasn't done much besides "Kingdom of Heaven." As you can tell, I'm excited about this movie. (I'm writing a blog about it!). Even after watching over 2 hours of Mann's "Vice" goodness, I still couldn't stop talking about this trailer. I can't wait.
Anyway, "Miami Vice" is a good film that hits the right marks as an undercover cop flick set in the world of the south american drug trade. The gratuitous shots of fast cars, cigar boats, and slick planes aside, this is Michael Mann through and through. But it is perhaps his most shallow film to date. There's really not much depth to the characters or story than your average cop movie, just a lot better done. Farrell was solid, as was Foxx. The bad guys were better. And there's a big gun fight at the end. Need I say more? 3.5/5.
I want to see new "Rocky" film. I'm sorry. I have a soft spot for the character, and honestly the movie doesn't look too bad.
