Cliff Notes Catechism

One thing that's been bothering me about the media coverage of the Pope's death, and the new Pope's election, is the constant commentary on how "out of touch" the Catholic Church is with its followers. Most Americans disagree with the Church's stance on abortion, contraception, homosexuality, the death penalty, and a couple other hot button issues I can't remember. The commentators are always quick to point this out; they cite it as this HUGE DISCONNECT b/w the Vatican and the world. And with the election of cardinal Ratzinger, a conservative, they can say it for another 30-odd years.

Now, you all know I really have no place discussing religion -- I haven't been to church in months -- but am I wrong in stating that the Catholic Church's teachings are A LOT more than just its stances on these hot button issues? Sure, they're critical issues, but there are dozens of other ones that most people agree with. Catholicism teaches forgiveness, compassion, moderation, sharing your faith, and on and on. Last I checked, the Ten Commandments didn't include "Thou Shalt Not Wear a Rubber." I know I know, the Ten Commandments applies to more than just Catholicism, but you see my point. The fact that so many commentators just LOVE to point out the "disconnect" is yet another example of secular bias in the media. You know I'm right.

And I bet it's not just the Catholic religion that treats abortion, homosexuality, and contraception as sins. And show me ANY institution whose policies you COMPLETELY agree with. My stupid point is this: You aren't going to find a religion that fits your personal moral code like a glove. There will always be a disconnect (at least as MSNBC defines it).

The REAL disconnect is the Church's handling of its child molestation crisis. That's inexcusable.

Anyway, off to watch "Scrubs and "The Office," both of which feature characters who are MAJOR sinners. JD is going to hell for kissing Carla.
