Terry Schiavo
Ok, so I just started hearing about the Terry Schiavo case, and now Congress is all up on Sunday night debating some bill on the house floor that would take the case to Federal court.
Hello? Republicans? What happened to States' rights? What happened to idea of not letting the Federal government interject whenever it damn well pleases? I've been listening to the commentary all night, and I have not heard one good argument for why Congress should get involved in cases like this (there are hundreds of them). Sure, the video of Terry looks like she's more than a vegetable, and her parents vouch for this, and yes, life is surprising, anything can happen....but it's not our right, or Congress's right, to stand in judgement here. The fact is, 9 Florida judges have reviewed this case multiple times over the past 15 years, and they've all come to the same conclusion: Terry Schiavo is in a persistent vegetative state, she would want to die, and her husband has the right to let her die. Of course, everyone is questioning his motives -- he now lives with another woman and has two kids, but hasn't divorced Terry -- but so far no one has any evidence that he has something to gain by her dying (like, say, an insurance policy). Congress has looked at this case for, oh, about the past week. The state of Florida has looked at it for 15 years. 'Nuff said. Although I'm sure Anne Coulter will come up with something to defend this shit, from a legal standpoint at least.
It seems clear to me that the Republicans are using this as a political football to get on the good side of the religious right. And the Democrats that happen to support this bill are probably doing the same thing.
It's sad. The whole thing is friggin sad.
Anyway, on the lighter side, "Boston Legal" was on tonight and it once again took well-aimed jabs at all things conservative/Bush-y. One week it was the admin's policy in the Sudan. Last week it was Fox News. This time it was the state of Texas. It's getting kind of annoying. David E. Kelly must piss blue.
